If you suffer from impotence, more commonly referred to as erectile dysfunction (ED), you are not alone. It is important to understand that ED is normal. Having a condition that causes an inability for the penis to become erect goes beyond the physical problem. The emotional and psychological impact of the body’s failure to perform can be very stressful. There is a solution. Low-intensity shock wave therapy is being used to repair and enforce the blood vessels in the penis. By increasing the blood flow in the penis, it restores the ability to achieve an erection. We are going to review the treatment procedure and cost of shockwave therapy, so you can make an informed decision on whether this innovative treatment is for you.
Standard Treatment Procedure
Low-intensity shockwave therapy (LISWT) is new to the United States but has been used since 2010 in Europe and throughout the world to treat erectile dysfunction.
The standard process requires having treatments done in a physician’s office. The doctor administers treatment by using a wand-like device that delivers mild shockwaves to the penis for about 15 minutes. There is no need for anesthesia.
The Internal Society for Sexual Medicine states that the LISWT uses acoustic waves to trigger neovascularization in the penis. This causes new blood vessels to grow, increasing blood flow to the penis.
In an analysis of 10 randomized control trials involving a total of 900 men with vasculogenic ED using LISWT, every participant experienced improved blood flow to the penis. Some obtain success with LISWT alone. Others need to supplement with a PDE5 inhibitor.
Treatment is done in the physician’s office over a six-week period, with one treatment per week. Each treatment takes about 15 minutes, and 95% of the patients experience no pain. About 62% of men receiving LISWT achieve success.
The definition of success is when a man goes from zero erections to achieving erections that allow them to penetrate. The alternative success level is when PDE5 inhibitors no longer provide an erection, but with LISWT, they are able to achieve success following the use of an inhibitor. The benefits of this treatment usually last about a year.
Shockwave therapy is not yet FDA approved, and no recommendations have been made regarding the frequency of treatment. A 2019 review of clinical trials states the most common treatment is two times a week for three weeks, then three weeks with zero treatments, followed by another three week period with two treatments a week.
The Cost of Shockwave Therapy
Making numerous trips to a physician’s office to receive treatment is costly. Not only will you pay for the medical treatments, but you also need to consider the cost of your time, gas to drive to and from the office, and lost wages from work.
Here are some LIWST treatment costs:
Dr. Michael Ruscio, DNM, DC
Dr. Michael Ruscio of Austin, Texas, refers to LISWT as a “jackhammer for your genitals” because of its stimulation to the penis increasing blood flow. He explains that the results will depend on your personal level of health and that it takes about one month of treatment before you show improvement.
The cost for treatment by Dr. Ruscio is $3,000 for six treatments and $500 for each maintenance treatment.
GAINSWave® LISWT is performed by a certified GAINSWave provider. Their treatment protocol is:
- Start with six treatments once or twice a week; 12 treatments in 6 or 12 weeks if you have a low SHIM score
- BTL numbing cream 30 minutes before treatment
- 15-20 minute treatment period
- You may resume normal activities after treatment, and they encourage you to have sex
- The improvement becomes noticeable generally in the 5th week
- No anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs during treatment
- Recommends maintenance follow-up protocol
The cost for these treatments starts at $500 per session. The actual number of sessions you will require will vary based on your physical needs.
Dr. LeRoy Jones
Dr. LeRoy Jones of At Urology San Antonio oversees their Shockwave Therapy program. His findings show that the results of shockwave therapy can last for up to two years. Dr. Jones finds LISWT to be a good choice for men who:
- Need to improve their body’s response to oral medications taken for ED
- Want to reverse the cause of ED
- Are looking for a non-invasive treatment for ED
Therapy with Dr. Jones generally requires six treatments over a six week period. Within 30 days after completing the full six-week treatment program, 50-80% of his patients show improvement in their erections.
A numbing gel is applied to the penis prior to receiving treatment. The majority of his patients say they experience a tingling or light tapping sensation, but no pain during the 15-20 minute session.
Each treatment is $350, so a normal six-week session will cost $2,100.

Shockwave Treatment v. Viagra®
Before the creation of shockwave treatment, men had to suffer from erectile dysfunction or take internal medication such as Viagra®, Stendra®, Cialis®, and Levitra®. With medication, timing is everything.
Take that pill too soon, and your erection may have come and gone before you are ready. Take it too late, and you are not yet erect when you and your partner want to move things along.
Shockwave therapy not only eliminates the timing issue, but it comes without the possible side effects common to medication.
If you rely on medication to resolve your ED, you are making a lifelong commitment to a temporary resolution. Medication also carries the risk of an exaggerated or prolonged erection, which can cause permanent damage to the penis.
The benefits of using shockwave therapy to resolve your erectile dysfunction are the safer choice:
- It has few to no side effects
- The treatment is non-invasive and requires no anesthetic
- You no longer have to undergo the embarrassment of picking up your “little blue pill” from the pharmacy
- The investment provides a worthy payoff
Cost of Shockwave Therapy Review
Just a quick review of the above costs make it clear that providing your own in-home therapy for erectile dysfunction not only allows you to maintain your privacy, but it is also very cost-effective:
- Michael Russo—$3,000 for six treatments + $500 maintenance
- GAINSWave—$3,000 to $6,000 depending on the need of six or twelve treatments
- LeRoy Jones—$2,100 for six treatments
- RenewWave—$1,800 for six treatments
- EDX by Fluent—$699.00 for unlimited treatments in the privacy of your home
- EDX 2 by Fluent—$2,249.00 for 300,000+ treatments in privacy of your home
Shockwave therapy does not yet have the approval of the FDA. Even though not approved, scientific studies support this type of treatment for erectile dysfunction.
Because it is an unapproved treatment, insurance companies will not cover the cost of treatment. The potential for needing maintenance treatments after 1-2 years increases the out-of-pocket cost for sessions done in a medical facility.
